What Do You Fear?

Let’s talk about fear. We may not all be afraid of the same thing, but it’s a feeling that we all share. Fear is an ancient part of us that is meant to keep us safe. Fear keeps us out of places and situations that can be dangerous like dark alleys or trampolines…don’t ask. The point is that we all have fears – maybe it’s speaking in front of people and that fear keeps you from raising your hand even when you know the answer. Fear can hamper success because people don’t get to know you. Maybe it makes you so awkward that when you do speak it hurts your relationships with friends and colleagues. I know a little something about this unfortunately – up until recently I had a crippling fear of speaking to groups of people. Cold sweat inducing, hive raising, shaky voiced fear that made me want to run away….awkwardly. I found myself at a crossroads: I could hide where it was comfortable and hope that success and happiness just fell into my lap, or I could step out into the light so to speak. I put myself in situations where I couldn’t hide anymore. Professionally it was difficult but honestly the most out spoken scientist in the room is probably still pretty introverted, and now I’ve met and spoken with hundreds of other professionals in my field. Socially it was more difficult for me – kind of like walking into WOR and signing up for group classes.

That’s another thing we have in common: we chose health and fitness over whatever had been holding us back. Social anxiety didn’t stop us, our appearance didn’t hold us back, we vanquished the demon. We completed the hardest part of the journey: we. showed. up! So now that you’re here don’t let the fear of a movement you’re not great at make you take a rest day. Don’t let the fear of how you look keep you from wearing shorts or ditching the shirt during the WOD. You’re your own toughest critic and the only judgement taking place is between your ears. Now I don’t want to make anyone nervous here – I’ll leave the booty shorts at home ;). If you miss a few weeks or months even, don’t be afraid to come back. We’re here for you. What if you aren’t a member of Crossfit WOR? Are you interested in investing in yourself and taking the first steps toward becoming fit? Are you afraid it may be weird or are you under the impression that others may not accept you? I coach Tuesday and Friday evenings, we can be weird together.
