How to Successfully Begin Your CrossFit Journey: Observations from a Personal Trainer – Part 5

Listen to Body

And most importantly, just listen to your body. Your body gives you all kinds of clues as to what it needs and wants but you have to pay attention to it. During workouts, stay tuned in to what is happening through each movement and be intentional throughout; think your body through it. Check in periodically to make sure that you are in control of your breathing and your heart rate is manageable. After a workout, drink water, fuel your body with good recovery foods and supplements. And even though it’s my guess that you’ll want to return to the box every single day and lift all the things and do all the burpees…pay attention to if and when your body is screaming at you to have an active-recovery rest day instead. Some people can go twice a day every day and seem to never slow down. You may be that person. But more likely, you’re the kind of person that needs a rest day here and there…to lower your weight for a particular workout…modify a certain movement…all in order to allow your body to rest, recover, and in essence, continue get stronger. And you totally will!

If you’ve already made the decision to begin a CrossFit program – congrats! The hardest work is done. Making that decision can be a difficult one and I’m so proud of you for making it! If you’re on the fence, here’s my advice. Just give it a try. No one ever accomplished anything by just thinking about it. What have you got to lose?
