Stories from CF WOR – Ashley

For me I had tried CrossFit a few years before and only stuck with it for maybe a month. The box wasn’t my fit and honestly I was not in the right mind set to get serious about my health. Fast forward to a few years later, I got myself a gym membership at a gym that could careless if I showed up or not they just wanted their $10 a month along with the membership I got an overpriced personal trainer once a week. I also gradually made changes to my diet. Turns out a personal trainer pushing me one day out of the week and me “pushing” myself in the gym the other days was not very effective for me. Sure I had lost weight because I had changed my diet for the better but my strength and endurance still was not there. In August of 2015 about a year after signing up at a gym, I set in a public health conference that challenged me to set a goal and let someone know about it. Recently my office had moved to Sapulpa and I wanted to try out CrossFit WOR but of course I was a little nervous because my CrossFit experience in the past was not the best. As I set in the conference I wrote down “try CrossFit for a least a month”. I then sent a text to my boyfriend Zac and told him that I was going to give CrossFit a try for a month and see how it goes. In September 2015 I called Lamonte and asked about the free intro class. I made plans to be there the next Saturday and give WOR a try. Keep in mind that up until the year before, I was not physically active or an ex-athlete of any sport. I did not know anyone at the box I was walking into the unknown. I started my CrossFit journey for health not because I want to have abs or because one of my friends talked me into it. Being more comfortable in my own skin, gaining more confidence, and looking better in a bikini was just an added bonus. I am in better shape than I ever have been even from my high school self. I fit into jeans from high school (8 years ago) in fact they are a little big. If I could give any advice to someone coming into CrossFit WOR it would be do NOT be discouraged if you don’t “know” people or you aren’t “athletic” because I can promise you, you will KNOW people and you are ATHLETIC! Stepping into CrossFit WOR September 2015 was one of the best decisions I have made and I am forever thankful to Lamonte and Julie for opening up their doors and creating a positive and supportive environment that encourages healthy lifestyles. People can and will say what they will about CrossFit and following behind it but this is something that is getting people up and moving and encouraging healthy eating habits! This is something that America desperately needs as obesity rates increase along with all the health problems that follow a sedentary lifestyle and poor diet. CrossFit has changed my life for the better! I’ll never forget the day I did my first pull-up ever in my life at WOR! This is something I never thought possible before CrossFit. Of course CrossFit like anything has had its days that I have not been where I wanted to be. The day that I bailed a back squat the wrong way is also something I will not forget and not my proudest moment. However in times I may feel defeated you can always find some positive. The day I bailed the back squat wrong I was glad that I stretch regularly because my flexibility saved me that day. My passion is public health specifically, obesity. Just like obesity and chronic disease does not discriminate neither does CrossFit. ANYONE can do CrossFit! I love that I can be a part of something that is impacting people’s health for the better.
