We live in a sedentary world. Between phones, tablets, and Netflix, we rarely find time to be active. Most of us have sedentary jobs, and throw in the kids who spend seven hours a day behind a desk as well, and we have become a very immobile society. Heck, we don’t even have to grocery shop anymore. We can do that at the computer and sit in the car to pick it up. We are finding that we all have shortened attention spans and can be quite cranky due to all the lack of activity. So, what do we do about it? How do we change this way of life? Quite simply, we move.

I wandered into my first CrossFit gym six years ago in search of a good workout. I was searching for the next thing that was going to make me skinny. I have always been conscious of my weight and my food intake, but no clear path. It was in the first few weeks of my CrossFit experience that I realized that this workout was much more than just a workout. In the following months my way of thinking about fitness and my body were completely changed. However, these are not the only things that changed in my way of thinking. Fitness was no longer something I did to look skinny, it was a way of life. It was an active life with my family. It changed the way we live.

As we have learned in CrossFit, it’s better when you are with a group, when you have support. Having an active family is the same way. When we are in it together, we have fun rather that feeling like work. We take hikes, we go places, we climb and run and enjoy each other. There are so many ways to get your family involved in fitness. There are fun runs and bike races. Grab your kids and some water and go for a hike. Go to the park and play. We find that when we are active together we are happier. The endorphins kick in and we enjoy one another more.

Now, don’t get me wrong. We also enjoy our down days as well. Sometimes you just need to veg out and do nothing, but when you get the chance, get outside and play. Our children spend a lot of time sitting at school, with only 45 minutes for recess. They crave activity. A few years ago, our oldest son was having some issues with concentration at school. After talking with a doctor and then an occupational therapist we found that what has helped him most is activity. To run, jump, and play changes his brain chemistry and allows him to focus more when he is still. However, it’s not just the kids who need it. We adults will find our brains are more focused and clear when we are active, when our bodies move.

I’ve always said I do CrossFit for the future 70-year-old me. Whoever she may be, she needs to be able to move, to be able to play with her grandkids, and enjoy life. CrossFit isn’t just a workout, it’s a lifestyle, and when you can get your entire family active, you will find you are a happier group. Throw in a little CrossFit kids and you will see that your kids will feel empowered, strong, and happy as well. The purpose of this life is to enjoy it, not watching it go by from your couch. So, get outside (when it gets a bit warmer) and play.
