CrossFit WOR Glossary

AMRAP, 1 POOD , PR, WOD…what does it all mean?

If you’re new to CrossFit you will quickly discover a lingo unique to the sport.

There are a plethora of CrossFit terms out there, ranging from abbreviations to made up terms.

We know how overwhelming this all can be and are aware that a list of equipment,

movements, and training methods could go on forever.

So we’ll share some of the most popular CrossFit terms and phrases to get you started.

Affiliate – A CrossFit Box owner
AMRAP – As Many Repetitions/Rounds As Possible. Typically, in a specified time frame
Bench Mark WOD- A CrossFit workout that gets repeated every few months to quantify success/ results
Box – CrossFit Gym
BW – Body weight
C&J – Clean and Jerk, a technical weightlifting position
C2B – Chest to bar pull up
Chalk – Helps with grip
Chipper – a workout with many reps and many movements. You chip away at it
DNF – Did not finish
DU’s/ DUBS – Double Unders (2 rotations of the rope in one jump)
EMOM – Every Minute on the Minute
GHD – Glute Hamstring Developer
Girl Named Workouts – Naming structure by CrossFit HQ for Bench mark workouts
Greg Glassman – Founder of CrossFit
GPP – General Physical Preparedness
Hang Snatch/Clean – Olympic Lift. Barbell start at position 1 or 2
Hero WODs – CrossFit workouts honoring those who have fallen in duty
HQ – Refers to CrossFit Headquarters
HSPU – Handstand Push Up
Humility – Trait every CrossFitter should possess
K2E – Knees to elbow (while hanging from a pull up bar)
KBS- Kettle bell swings (American swing is over head, Russian swing is to chest height)
Kipping – a rocking motion to help use momentum to complete a pull-up, ring dip or handstand push ups
ME – Max effort
MetCon – Metabolic Conditioning
BMU – Bar Muscle Up
OHS – Over Head Squat
Pistol – One-legged squat
Pood – Weight of the kettlebell (1 pood = 16kg)
Power Snatch/Clean – Olympic lift. When the barbell is received above parallel
PR – Personal Record. Highest number of reps or fastest time attained at completing a specific WOD
Front Rack Position – Bar resting on you collar bone and anterior deltoids support by hands
Rep – A repetition or instance of a given exercise
ROM – Range of motion
Rx’d – As Prescribed. The suggested parameters for a given exercise. Ex. Weight
Score – denotes number of total reps or time completed during workout
SDHP – Sumo Deadlift High-pull
Set – a group of repetitions
Squat Snatch or clean- When the barbell is received below parallel
Stabilize the Midline – Controlling the muscles around the spine to make it stable and strong during exercise
T2B – Toes to bar (While hanging from a pull up bar)
Tabata – A protocol of 20 seconds of exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest- Named after Dr. Tabata
TGU – Turkish Get Up
Touch and Go (TnG) – No pausing between reps
UB (Unbroken)– Perform all reps without a break
WB – Wall Ball
WOD – “Workout of the Day”
